The 2nd Cornwall Light Infantry battalion were in Hong Kong when the war started in August, 1914, but they soon returned to England where they joined 82 Brigade, 27th Division which landed in France in December, 1914 where 82 Brigade took over the St Eloi sector, south of Ypres staying there until mid-March.

On 14th February, 1915, they were in billets in Dickebusch when at 4.10pm very heavy shelling began as a result of which the 1st Leinster battalion were driven from their trenches at Voormezeele. 2nd Cornwall were immediately sent there to join in a counter-attack to retake these lost trenches. This took place during the night and the trenches were successfully recaptured but not without cost, the 2nd Cornwall battalion suffering over forty casualties, including James Adams who was killed.
